The National Portrait Gallery

Situated in St Martin’s Place off Trafalgar Square in the heart of London, next to the National Gallery, which faces across Trafalgar Square, The National Portrait Gallery contains a collection of the portraits of the famous and historically important persons in British history.

The collection reflects the importance of the persons whose portraits are displayed rather that the importance or fame of the artist. The gallery was opened in 1856 and was the fist gallery of its type in the world. It is sponsored by the Department of Culture Media and Sport.

The National Portrait Gallery is near to Trafalgar Square, Leister Square and Charing Cross tube stations.
