Abbeyfeale (Mainistir na Féile)

Abbeyfeale is a market town in County Limerick, Republic of Ireland near the boundary with County Kerry. The town is 13 miles from Newcastle West on the N21.
It has a urban population of around 1,700.

Geography

The town is situated on the banks of the River Feale in the foothills of the Mullaghareirk Mountains in the southwest of Ireland.

The Town

In the May Bank Holiday weekend the town hosts the "Fleadh by the Feale" traditional music festival. The International Bone Playing Competition is the highlight of the festival and is held on the Bank Holiday Monday evening in the town square.

The main feature in Abbeyfeale's Square is a statue of Father William Casey, who was the parish priest who helped the tenant farmers fight against their landlords.

Virtually no trace remains of the abbey, the only identifiable remnants being those used in the construction of the Roman Catholic church. The Geraldine Portrinard Castle is situated northwest of the town, on the northbank of the Feale.
