Abernethy

Abernethy (Obar Neithich) is a village in Perth and Kinross, eight miles south-east of Perth. It has a population of around 1,000. The village's name is Pictish, meaning 'confluence of the Nethy'

Geography

Abernethy sits in the Ochill hills overlooking the lands of the Earn and Tay estuaries and is on the banks of the River Earn where it joins the River Tay close to the border with Fife. Perth and KInross is one of the most lovely areas of Scotland and Abernethy is an ideal point for exploring this part of Scotland

History

The remains of an Iron Age hill fort can be seen on Castle Law, above the village. There ia a roman camp at Ardargie, just to the west. Abernethy was chosen by the Pictish Kings as their capital and place of residence.

Industry

Agriculture plays a large part in the local economy but Abernethy once had salmon fishers & ferrymen. The salmon fishing has all but disappeared in the Abernethy area and the ferries have closed. A post office, bakery and newsagent are the to be found on the Main Street and the village still has two local pubs.

The round tower built in the early 9th century.

The Tootie house is a reminder of the days when the cowherd blew his horn as a signal for the villagers to release their cows to be driven to the common grazing.
