Abergele

Abergele is a small town with a population of around 17,500, near the north Wales coast between the holiday resorts of Colwyn Bay and Rhyl, in the county borough of Conwy. It is known for its beach which is on the Irish Sea coast. Abergele is noat as well known as the nearby resorts of Rhyl, Prestatyn, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno and Conwy.

Geography

The town is on the A55 road. The town is surrounded by wooded hillsides. The highest point is Moelfre Isaf (1038 ft). Also the hills of Cefn-yr-Ogof (669 ft), Tower Hill (587 ft) and Tan-y-Gopa all of which offer fantastic views from their summits.

History

There are many sites of historical interest, including two Iron Age hill forts. Castell Cawr at Tan-y-Gopa and Fort Dinorben Another iron-age fort can be seen at Pen-y-Corddyn mawr hill above Rhyd-y-foel. The town was a Roman settlement and the genetic make up of the population indicates that the Romans who originally settled there came from North Africa.
