Aberdare is located in Rhondda Cynon Taff a county in south Wales, Its population is around 32,000. It is 4 miles S.W. of Merthyr Tydfil and 24 miles N.W. of Cardiff.

Industry

Traditionally part of the iron and coal industrial area of South Wales, Aberdare now has light engineering, tourism and office employment.

History

Originally a small agricultural village, Aberdare grew rapidly in the 9th century owing to the abundance of coal and iron ore, Many Ironworks were established but these ceased working in 1875. After this date the economy of the town was mainly associated with the coal industry, although there were also brickworks and breweries. In the 11th century, the nearby Hirwaun moor was the site where Rhys ap Tewdwr, prince of Dyfed, was defeated by the allied forces of the Norman Warlord Robert Fitzhamon and Iestyn ap Gwrgant, the last prince of Glamorgan, who in turn was defeated by the Norman Marcher Lords.
