Home

The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads is a unique area of water, grazing marshes, fen and woodland, and home to some of the rarest plants and creatures in the UK. It is Britain's largest protected wetland, having similar status to a national park.

The Broads Authority was set up in 1989 to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Broads, promote the enjoyment of the Broads and protect the interests of navigation.

Globally, wetlands are among the most threatened of landscapes. The Broads is also one of Europe's most popular inland waterways. Once an essential transport network, today the waterways are used for recreation, attracting more than a million visitors a year. The Broads has special status - it is one of the national and international family of National Parks - for its blend of wildlife, distinctive landscapes and buildings, and the opportunities for people to relax and enjoy themselves both on land and on many kilometres of lock-free navigable waterways. The area is managed by the Broads Authority

Facilities

The potential for recreation on land and water in the Broads is immense. Sailing, motor boating, rowing, canoeing, fishing, walking, sight-seeing and bird watching are just some of the ways people enjoy the area.
One of the central responsibilities of the Broads Authority is to promote public enjoyment of the Broads. With more than a million visitors a year, tourism needs sensitive management to protect the area and the quality of the experience for all.

The Broads Authority promotes 'quiet enjoyment' and sustainable tourism: recreation that does no lasting damage to the Broads environment, or to other people's enjoyment of it

    Extra Info

The Broads is more than a collection of important sites and species. The different landscapes, land-use, habitats, and the wildlife they support make up an internationally renowned wetland ecosystem.

The major habitats are interrelated parts of the ecosystem. Examined separately in this section, they are:

rivers and broads, fen and carr woodland. grazing marsh, estuary.

The Broads Authority has developed habitat-based restoration and conservation strategies with its partners in the Broads. These working strategies are based on a thorough evaluation of the natural resources and the potential for nature conservation, and use both traditional agricultural and innovative management methods

    Leisure

The Broads is a fascinating and varied area with a rich history, reflected in the many wonderful places to visit and the unique wildlife. There are restored windmills, medieval churches, beautiful gardens and magnificent houses to visit. If you enjoy walking or cycling, there are also many routes to choose from.

For most people, the best way to explore the Broads is by water, as much of the history of the Broads revolves around the way the rivers have been used over the years. For many, the charm of the Broads rests on the illusion of remoteness you get when you're on the water. You can be near a busy road or a village without knowing that there is anybody or anything for miles around. So, whatever you do, try to get afloat and you will find much to surprise and delight you.
