The Lake District National Park in the north-west of England is the largest of England's National Parks. Its 2,292 square kilometres cover fells, dales, lakes and villages. The National Park also includes part of the West Coast, with beaches and tidepools.

The countryside may seem wild, but its appearance is because of human activity, particularly farming. People have been using the area for at least 10,000 years. In 1951 it was designated as a National Park to protect it for future generations.

The Lake District National Park was created by the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 and came into being on 15 August 1951.

Covering 880 square miles, the Lake District National Park is the largest of England's National Parks. The grandeur of its scenery was a major factor in bringing about statutory protection and recognition of this north western corner of England.

The idea of National Parks dates back to the Romantic poets. Wordsworth, who lived in Grasmere, described the Lake District as a "sort of national property in which every man has a right and interest who has an eye to perceive and a heart to enjoy".

The Lake District National Park includes one third of the County of Cumbria and extends from Caldbeck in the north to Lindale in the south, from Ravenglass in the west to Shap in the east. The present National Park Authority was set up under the Environment Act 1995 and took over the running of the National Park in April 1997.
