Places of Interest
In itself the phrase places of interest t is a wide meaning term and can even be used for stately homes, old abbeys and churches, theme parks, zoos and country parks but in the context of Funinbritain, we tend to use these for geographical or physical features rather than for other attractions which can be more easily categorised.
There are many places worth visiting in their own right. It may be a castle ruin or an area of outstanding natural beauty such as Exmoor or the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. It could be an ancient monument such as Stonehenge or the many standing stones, earthwork, hill forts and burial mounds that can be found in every corner of Britain as a lasting testament to the stone and bronze age cultures that flourished in these islands thousands of years ago. Some of these such as Sutton Hoo, Avesbury and Stonehenge have been excavated and made available to the public to view, others remain either unexplored or inaccessible.
Many of the castle and abbey ruins are in remote locations and have a charm all of their own. Monasteries and abbeys were often built by religious communities that sought solitude and some of the castles were built to defend a strategic location rather than any settlement.
In general such physical features do not have a post code or postal address so they need to be found on a good ordnance survey map or by their GPS coordinates. Some of them, like standing stones and burial mounds, may be on private land so always seek the permission of the landowner when you wish to visit these. Many do have public access either in their own right as an attraction or on-site museum. Some can be accessed by public footpath. They are often very ancient sites and care should be taken not to damage or litter these area which can be sensitive by nature.
