Hotels in Britain
Hotel is a category of accommodation that the tourist board and the accommodation industry have found difficult to agree a strict definition for. The Tourist Board and the AA define a Hotel as a property that has a number of rooms, 75% of which are en-suite, a dining room, staff on duty 24 hours a day to attend to the client’s needs and a property which also has a guest lounge, restaurant and bar.
That said there are a number of Hotels that provide less than that for example, some budget chains have facilities that technically should exclude them from being classed as hotels but no one disputes that they are a hotel and a small country Hotel may provide as good if not better quality accommodation than many of their city centre counterparts but would also technically fail to be classified as a hotel on a small technicality.
The best way to look at a hotel is to see what facilities it provides in relation to your requirements. If you have any form of disability, then hotels may be more suited to your stay. If you are travelling on business then a city centre hotel may be the best option to choose, but in reality, there are properties that quite rightly call themselves a hotel in all parts of the country and in all regions.
A hotel now has a standard rating system based on the star system which has been agreed between the AA and the tourist boards.
