The term Holiday Cottage is generally applied to a self catering property located in the countryside or in a small rural village. Traditionally, a Holiday Cottage would be seen as a thatched and a black and white beamed Holiday Cottage in a rural village or country setting. These days the term is used in a much wider context and can be applied to more modern buildings such as bungalows or even modern houses. The common feature of all these properties is that their setting justifies the use of the term Holiday Cottage even if they are not, strictly speaking, cottages at all. Houses and self catering properties in the larger towns and cities would not normally use that term to describe themselves although the term Holiday Cottage is used widely as an advertising ploy in the same way that some large hotels use the term Country House.
