The Ryder Cup 2010
The 38th Ryder Cup will be held in 2010 at the Celtic Manor Resort near Newport in Wales. It takes place between the 1st and the 3rd of October 2010.
The Ryder cup is a bi-annual event with two teams of twelve players from Europe and America competing a trophy. The 2010 Ryder Cup Captains are Colin Montgomerie
for Eurpoe and Corey Pavin for the USA.
History of the Ryder Cup
The trohpy was donated originally by Samuel Ryder in 1927, following two unofficial matches betrween the two sides. The competition began following an
exhibition match in 1926 between a team of American professional players playing against a professional team from the British PGA. The event took place on
the East Course at Wentworth Club in Surrey. Early matches between the two sides were fairly even, but after the Second World War, the Americans dominated the results.
The competition was extended to include continental Europe in 1979. Following this change the event has enjoyed more competitive matches, with Europe winning seven
times and retaining the Cup once, with seven American wins over this period.
The Venue
Celtic Manor is one of Europe's leading golf resorts and boasts three top class courses. There are two hotels at The Celtic Manor Resort, set in 1,400
acres of Parkland. The hotels can accommdate guests in 400 rooms (330 in the Hotel and 70 in the Manor House). Additionally the resort provides two spas, two
health clubs, a shooting school, fishing, tennis courts, mountain biking, walking trails and five restaurants.
Competition Format
The order of play for the first two days is Foursomes in the morning and Fourball in the afternoon. The final day's play is the Singles. The format of the
competition consists of eight foursomes matches (two players from each side taking alternate shots with a team ball), eight fourball matches (two players from
each team playing their own ball) and 12 singles matches. On the Friday and Saturday, the captains can pick eight players from their team to take part in the
pairs games. The winner of each match scores a point for their team, with half point for any match that is tied after 18 holes. The defending champions need only
score 14 points to secure the title, the challengers have to win outright.
