It is a show case for the best British and Irish trainers and attracts many punters from all corners of Britain and Ireland. The amount of money bet during the Cheltenham Festival runs to hundreds of millions of pounds and the prize money exceeds £3.6 million. The first Cheltenham Festival was held in 1902 and the first Cheltenham Gold Cup race was held in 1904. Traditionally a three day event with six races per day, this was changed to a four day event in 2005 to allow one championship race to be held on each day and an additional 7 races have been added bringing the total to 26 races. There are a series of races over the four days including the Championship Hurdle, the Queen Mother Championship Chase, the World Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which is run on the last day.
By car use the M5 and leave at junctions 9, 10 or 11. Follow the AA signs to the racecourse. By train use Cheltenham Spa Station. There are regular buses that leave every 10 minutes. The postcode for Sat Nav is GL50 4SH.
