2014 Commonwealth Games

The 20th Commonwealth games will be held in Glasgow over 11 days between the 24th of July to the 3rd of August 2014. They will be the largest multi-sporting event Glasgow has ever staged. Scotland has hosted the games before, in Edinburgh in 1970 but the Glasgow bid for the games was made in 2004. The city was confirmed as the venue for the Commonwealth Games in 2007. The Commonwealth Games are held every four years and involve teams from members of the Commonwealth of Nations (former parts of the British Empire and later the British Commonwealth). 54 countries send 71 teams to the event. The United Kingdom sends four teams for the main elements of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland) and three more for the Crown Dependencies (Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man). Other countries, such as Australia and New Zealand have separate teams for their own dependencies which boosts the number of teams to a higher number than the countries involved.
