The Great North Run
This half marathon has become the most popular and well known half marathon running event in the World. The race entrants run between Newcastle-upon-Tyne, across the Tyne Bridge and finish in South Shields. The first Great North Run was held in 1981 and was advertised as a “Fun Run” and started with 12,000 runners. Today, over 100,000 people apply and 52,000 competitors are awarded a place to take part. Only the London Marathon attracts a similar number of runners. Places are allocated by ballot to interested applicants and a large number of automatic places are dedicated to various charities. Entrants who wish to partake but fail in the ballot can gain an automatic place by volunteering to the charity for one of their places and help the by raising sponsorship. The Great North Run attracts a wide degree of media coverage and is televised around the World.
