The Henley Royal Regatta
Often known simply as The Henley Regatta, The Henley Royal Regatta is an annual event held on the River Thames at the Oxfordshire town of Henley-on-Thames. The event is staged during the first week of July, over five days from Wednesday to Sunday, and the events are knock out competitions between two boats, over a course measuring one mile, five hundred and fifty yards, from Temple Island, upstream towards Henley Bridge. Crews from many countries take part in the event and The Henley Royal Regatta has different rules to any other major rowing events, since the regatta pre-dates the national and international rowing federations. The main event of the regatta is the Grand Challenge Cup. Competitors can register their wish to enter the regatta, up to sixteen days before the event. There are however, a limited number of places and qualifying races on the actual course, are held on the Friday before the regatta and the final selection of the competitors made. The Henley Royal Regatta is one of the major social highlights of the year with spectators lining the course and picnicing along the banks of the River Thames and dining in the town of Henley on Thames. The event is organised by The Stewards.
