The Isle of Man TT Races
One of the main motor cycles events of the year, the Isle of Man TT Races are run in a time trial format on roads around the island that have been closed for the purpose. The event takes place during the last week of May and the first week of June.
The races start in Douglas on the south east coast and each lap covers 37 and three quarter miles, climbing from sea level at Douglas to over 1,300 feet with over 200 bends on ordinary public highway, and finishes back at Douglas.
The first official Isle of Man TT race took place in 1907 and was won by Charlie Collier at an average speed of 38.21 miles per hour. Today speeds can exceed 130 miles per hour. The event generates a carnival atmosphere with spectators lining the circuit.
The events are considered very dangerous and there have been over 200 deaths in the event’s history, During the TT races, it is difficult for tourist to travel around the island due to the road closures for the races.
