The London Marathon
This road race, which covers a traditional course of 26 miles and 385 yards, is held each spring in the capital city of London and has been an annual event since 1981. It was originated by the athletes Chris Brasher and John Disley, with sponsorship from Gillette. Mars took the sponsorship from 1984 to 1988, ADT from 1989 to 1992, Nutra Sweet from 1993 to 1995 and from 1996 till 2009 it was sponsored by Flora Margarine and is now sponsored by Virgin Money till 2014.
The London Marathon is one of the top 5 international Marathons, the others being New York, Boston, Berlin and Chicargo. The London Marathon encourages the runners to raise money for charity through sponsorship and many millions of pounds are raised for worthy causes.
The course is a relatively flat one around the River Thames and the course straddles the east and western hemispheres as it cross the Prime Meridian in Greenwich. The course provides some fast marathon times. The race starts from three points around Blackheath on the south side of the Thames, heads east through Charlton and the three initial courses come together in Woolwich. The main points along the curse are: the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, Surrey Quays, Bermonsey, Tower Bridge, Wapping, Limehouse, Isle of Dogs, Canary Wharf, Poplar, Commercial Road, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Embankment, Birdcage Walk, The Mall.
