The Edinburgh Festival
Officially, the Edinburgh Festival dates from 1947, although there were festivals held there in the 19th Century. The festival as we know it today, is a series of
festivals held at the same time, in August, which together make up the largest festival in the World. The Edinburgh Fringe and the Film Festival began life as
alternatives to the official festival. The Festival and the Fringe remain separate organisations and have different programmes and there is no official event called
the Edinburgh Festival. The Edinburgh Tatoo became part of the Festival in 1950. Others followed, including the Traverse Theater in 1965, the Jazz Festival in 1977,
the Book Festival in the 1980’s and the Art Festival in 2004. All the festivals take place in August each year in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The original festival was the creation of several individuals but was the brain child of Rudolf Bing, an Austrian impresario who had fled from the Nazis in 1934.
He initially wanted to hold a music festival in Oxford but this was not to be and another venue was sought. Edinburgh was proposed by Henry Wood who worked for the
British Council and the Festival Committee was set up in 1945 and a 3 week festival was planned for 1947.
In 2009, 1.85 million tickets were sold for the Festival. With the high number of visitors in August, accommodation can be hard to find during the festival.
