About Buckfastleigh
The small town of Buckfastleigh lies on the route of the A38, on the southern edge of the Dartmoor National Park. It was built at the confluence of two streams that run out of the Dartmoor hills and was originally a mill town with the mills powered by the water of the fast flowing streams. There were mills of several types in Buckfastleigh, for wool, corn and paper and these ran until 1920.
Buckfastleigh is a medieval town with later additions and was purpose built on the site for the milling industry. The town centre is now mainly Georgian and Victorian with twentieth century additions and it has a range of interesting buildings and public houses that retain many original features.
Buckfastleigh is about a mile south of the much older Buckfast Abbey which was originally built in 1018 in the time if King Canute. Abolished by King Henry VIII, in 1539, it stood as a ruin for three hundred years and was then bought and rebuilt by Benedictine monks between 1882 and 1937. It draws many thousand of visitors to Buckfastleigh. Buckfastleigh is one terminus of the South Devon Railway which operates steam locomotives that run along the River Dart between Totnes and Buskfastleigh.
Buckfastleigh is also famous for several major caves; Bakers Pit, Joint Mitnor cave and Reed’s Cave. Joint Mitnor contains the remains of many extinct species of animal that onced roamed over he Devon countryside thousands of years ago and include hyena. hippopotamus, bison, elephant and others.
