About Beer

The small and picturesque village of Beer is a small coastal cliff top community that lies about a mile west of Seaton, in Devon, a county in the West Country region of England. The nearest major towns are Exeter and Sidmouth. The sea coast area around Beer is part of the ninety five mile long Jurassic Coast with all the associated fossils finds that the Jurassic Coast is famous for.

Beer is an ancient Saxon town and the name derives from the Saxon word “bearu” which means grove or clearing in the forest. The cove and caves at Beer were once used by smugglers but today are part of the tourist attractions that bring hundreds of visitors during the season. The very complex caves system were formed a result of the quarrying of Beer stone, a rich yellow stone which was prized for use in making carvings and for building cathedrals and churches, including the cathedrals of Exeter, Westminster and St Paul’s. The quarrying has been carried out since Roman times. Beer also has the Pecorama Model Railway Exhibition Centre which is very popular.

Fishing is still part of the local economy of Beer and all catches are hauled up the cliff from the beach below by electric winch. The beach is reached by a path that winds down from the village of Beer, following a small brook. The beach is pebbly rather than sand and quite difficult to walk on. Today tourism is the major contributor to the economy of Beer.

Accommodation in Beer ranges from Hotels, Bed and Breakfast accommodation, Self catering cottages, caravan and camping sites.
