About Bampton

Bampton is a small market town that lies in mid Devon and is on the edge of the Exmoor National Park. It is located at the crossing of the B3227 and the B3190. It is also not far, about a mile and a half, from the A396 which crosses Exmoor to the north and ends at Dunster on the north coast and goes to Tiverton and Exeter in the South. It is an ideal location for exploring this part of Devon.

Bampton is a town that has an ancient market that received a charter from King Henry III in 1258 but it was already an old market at that time. The Romans were settled in Bampton and the Saxons of Wessex further developed the town when they took over Devon from the Cornish Kings. Bampton had a castle that was built by the Normans to subdue the local Saxon population. It was in the form of a motte and bailey of which only the motte or hill now remains and which now crown by trees. There are a number of old and impressive buildings together with pubs, restaurants and a range of shops in Bampton.

Bampton is a very popular tourist destination and has an annual Charter Fair which takes place in October evry year and which celebrates the Charter awarded to Bampton town in 1258. The Bampton Charter Fair attracts a wide range of businesses and a large number of visitors to the town and is an important event in the town’s annual calendar.
