About Ashburton

The small market town of Ashburton is located in the county of Devon, in the West Country region of England and is set on the southern edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Ashburton lies on the A38 about halfway between the major cities of Exeter and Plymouth and the nearest motorway is the M5.

Ashburton is an ancient Saxon town which was built on an earlier settlement dating from Roman times. Ashburton was a Stannary since at least 1285 and at one time handled forty percent of the tin mined in Devon. A Stannary was a town which handled all the lead produced locally and assayed the quality of the lead ore that was produced at the local mines and gave the lead ingots an official assay stamp. The mines were probably the reason the town was originally founded in pre-Roman times.

Ashburton is very well situated for holiday exploration of the county of Devon and beyond and especially Dartmoor National Park. There are many activities available in the area, including hill walking, fishing, water sports, pony trekking and bird watching.

The town is a reverse L in shape and has spread out along the River Ashburn and its tributaries. Ashburton retains many of its fine older buildings and has an active market and a range of shops and services. Ashburton is surrounded by the landscape of Dartmoor with rolling hills and moorlands.
