Geography

The county is almost entirely formed by the Wicklow Mts. and their foothills. The highest peak is Lugnaquilla, which rises to 3,039 feet (926 metres). The major rivers are the Liffey and the Slaney and the county has many lakes and picturesque glens.

Industry

Sheep and cattle are raised and grain is cultivated. Wicklow also has copper mines and a hydroelectric plant. It is a popular tourist destination.

History

There are ecclesiastical remains at Glendalough. The region maintained its independence from English control until quite late and Wicklow was not organized as a shire until 1606.
