Population 71,858 and covers an area of 681 square miles (1,838 sq km). The county
town is Mullingar.
In Westmeath there are the popular towns of Castlepollard

Geography
Part of the central plain of Ireland, the region is mostly level and very fertile,
with many lakes and bogs. The major river is the Inny.
Industry
Cattle are the chief production, although wheat, potatoes, and oats are grown. Some
textiles are manufactured.
History
Westmeath was separated from Meath as an independent county in 1543.
