Has its administrative centre in Hamilton. It covers an area of 684 square miles
(1,772 sq. km.) and has a population of around 308,000. It borders on the regions
of Scottish Borders, East Renfrewshire, Dumfries and Galloway, East Ayrshire, North
Ayrshire, City of Glasgow and North Lanarkshire.
Geography
South Lanarkshire stretches from the Lowther Hills in the Southern Uplands northwards
towards Blantyre, Rutherglen, Cambuslang, East Kilbrid, Larkhall, Carluke and Hamilton
on the southern outskirts of Glasgow. It is bisected from south to north by the
M74 motorway which links the north of England to Glasgow. Beyond the urban settlements
of Greater Glasgow it is a largely rural area with a handful of market towns including
Strathaven, Lanark and Biggar. The River Clyde flows through the area. The highest
point is Tinto (2,320 feet) in the south.
Industry
Textiles, electronics, engineering, fruit cultivation in the valleys of the Clyde;
less intensive grazing and stock rearing in the upland south; dairying around the
urban core in the north.
History
New Lanark village is a World Heritage Site, significant for the attempt to improve
living conditions for workers and their families in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
