It borders onto East Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway. It has an area of 480 square miles (1,245 sq. km.) and a population of around 114.000. The administrative centre is Ayre.

In South Ayrshire there are the popular towns of Prestwick, Ayr, Ballantrae and Prestwick.

Geography

From the coastal plain it rises to higher ground inland (1,640 feet). The main rivers are the Ayr, Stinchar, Water of Girvan. The highest points are Brown Carrick Hill (942 feet) and Ailsa Craig. The coastline has many beaches interspersed with cliffs and caves.

Industry

The major industries are aerospace, high technology, tourism, fishing , dairying, beef cattle, potatoes.

History

Birthplace of Robert Burns. This Unitary authority in southwest Scotland, was created in 1996 from Kyle and Carrick district (1975-96), Strathclyde region.
