Also known as Laoighis, Laois, or Leix, this county has a population of 58,774 and an area of 664 sq mi (1,719 sq km). The county seat is Port Laoise (Maryborough).

Geography

A part of the central plain of Ireland, it is generally level, except in the northwest where the Slieve Bloom Montains rise above the plain. The major rivers are the Barrow and the Nore.
