Kerry, has a population of 132,527 and an area of 1,815 square miles (4,746 sq km). The county town is Tralee.

In Kerry there are the popular towns of Tralee, Kilorglin, Listowel, Killarney and Castleisland.

Geography

Kerry consists of a series of mountainous peninsulas that extend into the Atlantic. The shoreline is deeply indented by Dingle Bay, Tralee Bay, and the Kenmare River. The mountains known as Macgillycuddy's Reeks, contain Carrantuohill 3,414 feet (1,041 metres), the highest point in Ireland.

Industry

The Lakes of Killarney are a popular tourist attraction. Oats and potatoes, fishing, sheep and cattle raising, and dairying are the main products of the county. Peat is excavated sold commercially. Footwear is made in Tralee and Killarney.

History

There are many prehistoric remains such as well-preserved dolmens and stone forts. From later periods, round towers, castles, and abbeys still stand. Inhabitants of the Dingle peninsula and the Blasket Islands still speak Irish Gaelic.
