Was formerly a region of three districts and a county until 1974. It now covers
an area of 510 square miles (1,321 sq. km) and has a population of around 350,000.
In Fife there are the popular towns of Dunfermline,
Lochgelly, Cupar,
Kirkcaldy and
Glenrothes.
Geography
The Kingdom of Fife in east central Scotland forms a peninsula jutting out into
the North Sea with the Firth of Forth to the south and the Firth of Tay to the north.
West Fife, between Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy. It major rivers are the Eden and the
Leven.
Industry
Electronics, petrochemicals, light engineering, oil servicing, paper, potatoes,
cereals, sugar beet, fishing (especially from Pittenweem)
History
It was originally one of the ancient Pictish kingdoms and is still known as the
Kingdom of Fife. It is also a traditional county of Scotland, and a Lieutenancy
Area. From 1975 to 1996 Fife had the districts Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy and North-East
Fife. Since 1996, the functions of these district councils have been exercised by
Fife Council.
