Covers an area of 67 square miles (174 sq. Km) and has a population of around 90,000.
It borders onto North Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and the City of
Glasgow. The administrative centre is Giffnock.
Geography
The authority is located on a low-lying plateau rising from the plain of the River
Clyde. It reaches out over an area of moorland and farming country through the city
suburbs of Newton Mearns, Barrhead, Neilston, Uplawmoor and Clarkston.
Industry
The products are engineering, cotton textiles, sheep and dairy farming.
History
East Renfrewshire includes the areas of Barrhead, Busby, Clarkston, Eaglesham, Giffnock,
Mearns, Neilston and Thornliebank and came into being in the local government reorganisation
of April, 1996. Before that the history goes back many centuries and there is evidence
of ancient hillforts at Dunwan, Duncarnock etc. The history includes the patron
saint Conval, the strong links between the Stewart kings, the civil war of the Covenant
and the hectic, industrial era which centred on the Cart and Levern rivers.
