This county has a population of 1,122,821, which includes the city of Dublin and
covers 327 square miles (921 sq km). It is situated on the Irish Sea. The county
is centred around the city of Dublin, which is the county seat and capital of Ireland.
In Dublin there are the popular towns of Blanchardstown
and Dublin 1.
Geography
The area is low-lying in the north and centre, rising to the Wicklow Mts. in the
south. The major river is the Liffey, which runs through the centre of the city
of Dublin and joins the sea at Dublin Bay. Off the coast are the two islands of
Lambay and Ireland's Eye.
Industry
The rural area is mainly dairy farming and the wheat, barley, and potatoes. Cattle
are also grazed; fishing is pursued along the coast. Industries include Hosiery,
chocolate and cement in the west.
History
Dublin was a Viking Kingdom for many years and was the centre for many raids along
the Welsh coat, It was later was organized as a county by King John of England in
the early 13th century. Dublin, heart of the English Pale, was strongly guarded
by castles along its boundaries.
