Population 410,487. Another of the six counties of Northern Ireland, County Down covers 2448 sq km and the county town is Downpatrick.

In County Down there are the popular towns of Coleraine, Londonderry, Newcastle, Hillsborough, Donaghadee, Holywood, Bangor, Ballynahinch.

Geography

The county is bonded by the Irish Sea and is deeply indented by Strangford Lough. The landscape gently rises to the Mourne Mountains in the south. The major rivers are the Lagan and the Bann.

Industry

Agriculture is the most important activity, and the area is extensively cultivated. Market gardening is common in the north. Sheep and pigs are also raised. Manufacturing includes linen, cotton, rayon, clothing, agricultural machinery, and metals. The chief manufacturing towns are Downpatrick and Ballynahinch. Fishing is economically important and herring and whitefish provide the main catch.
