County Derry coat of arms

Part of Northern Ireland, this area has a population of 211,669 and covers an area of 798 square miles (2,072 sq. km). The county town is Derry (also known as Londonderry)

In County Derry there are the popular towns of Aghadowey, Bellaghy, Castledawson, Coleraine, Draperstown, Dungiven, Kilrea, Limavady, Maghera, Moneymore and Derry.

Geography

In the south of the county are the Sperrin Mountains with their forests and river glens. To the east and north-east are wide Lough Foyle, Magilligan Strand (Ireland's longest beach) and the lovely and fascinating Roe Valley Country Park. West and north lies rugged County Donegal. All these areas provide marvellous fishing. For the motorist or walker they provide endless variety. Major rivers are the Foyle, the Bann, the Faughan, and the Roe.

Industry

Little plantation towns were built by the companies of the London Corporation who were given Irish land by the Crown. This was in the hope that they would subjugate and anglicise the county by bringing in English and Scottish settlers. However, also built by the Corporation, Derry City has a more traditional Irish and less metropolitan atmosphere than Belfast, and bears its history with palpable pride and bitterness. The first woman to fly the Atlantic solo, Amelia Earhart, brought her plane down here in 1932.
