The county population is 447,829 and has an area of 2,881 square miles (7,457 sq km) and is the largest of Ireland's counties. The county town is Cork.

In Cork there are the popular towns of Clonakilty, Rosscarbery, Macroom, Skibbereen, Mallow and Cork.

Geography

Cork has a rocky and indented coastline with many bays and natural harbours Inland the country has rugged mountains rising as to 2,239 feet (682 metres) and fertile valleys.

Industry

Agriculture is the most important industry including dairy, raising livestock, and grain and sugar beet. There is also an important fishing industry. The city of Cork has a growing manufacturing sector which includes computer technology, tweed cloth and electronic components. There is a large oil refinery at Whitegate. Tourism is important.

History

Notable prehistoric remains including dolmens and stone circles can be found as well as the ruins of medieval abbeys and churches, and Blarney Castle.
