History
The borough was formed on April 1, 1996, from the districts of Aberconwy and Colwyn,
as was originally known as Aberconwy and Colwyn. Its council renamed the district
on April 2. Conwy Castle was built as part of Edward I's second campaign in North
Wales. It was built between 1283 and 1289. Like many of the castles in the area,
it was designed by James of St George, the greatest castle designer in Europe, although
Richard of Chester was responsible for the initial stages. The castle is divided
into two wards, with the inner ward being surrounded by four towers, each with turrets.
An estimated £15,000 was spent building the castle and the town's defences,
a hugh sum of money in those days.
