Finding a hotel in Clackmannanshire

Clackmannanshire is the second smallest of Scotland's unitary authorities, bordering
onto the areas of Perth and Kinross, Stirling and Fife. It is nicknamed "The Wee
County". It covers 602 square miles (157 sq. km.) and has a population of around
48,000. Alloa is the county town and seat of local government.
Geography
Clackmannanshire lies in central Scotland between the River Forth to the south and
the Ochil Hills to the north. It is traversed by the River Devon. The Wee Coonty
stretches 10 miles North and South between Perthshire and the river Forth, and 11
miles East and West between Stirlingshire and the Kingdom of Fife; area, 30,477
acres. The surface rises from the river Forth by an easy ascent, broken by gentle
undulations and by the valley of the river Devon to the Ochil hills, which form
the counties Northern border. These hills afford excellent pasturage; the low grounds
are well cultivated. Coal used to be mined in the Devon valley but nowadays there
are no coalmines in Clackmannanshire at all.
Industry
Until the 1960s it was a centre of coal mining, heavy engineering and textile manufacture.
Today, the main industries are agriculture and brewing. Alva, Tillicoultry and Dollar,
are centres of brewing, distilling and the manufacture of textiles and glassware.
History
It is also a traditional county of Scotland, Under the Local Government Act of 1973,
the county of Clackmannanshire (or Clackmannan) became (1975) part of the Central
region. In the local government reorganization of 1996, the Central region was dissolved
and the council area of Clackmannanshire was created. The County motto is 'Look
Aboot Ye'. A popular explanation of this has it that one day King Robert the Bruce
was hunting in the Forest of Clackmannan. On returning to Clackmannan tower for
the night he found that he had lost one of his gauntlets. He sent his followers
out to look for his glove with the instruction 'Look Aboot Ye'.
