A county with a population of 45,845 and an area of 346 square miles (896 sq km).
The county town is Carlow and other major towns are Bagenalstown, Tullow.
In Carlow there are the popular towns of Fenagh,
Kildavin, Nurney,
Ballymurphy, Tullow,
Killerig and Fenagh.
Geography
In an otherwise lowland region, the granite uplands of the Blackstairs Mts. in the
southeast are a conspicuous feature.
Industry
Grain, sugar-beet, cattle raising, and dairying are the main occupations. There
are also flour-milling, malting, and sugar-refining industries.
History
Set up as a county in the early 13th cent., Carlow was strategically situated on
the southern edge of the English Pale. In the 13th century, it had palatinate privileges.
