Bridgend is a county borough in southern Wales with a population of around 135,000 and covers area of 80 square miles (246 km²). The county borough contains the towns of Bridgend, after which it is named, Maesteg, and the seaside town of Porthcawl. Local government projections indicate that there will be a continuing yearly increase through inward migration.

Geography

The main town is Bridgend. To the north are the former mining communities of the Llynfi, Garw and Ogmore Valleys, whilst to the South is the seaside resort of Porthcawl.

Industry

Bridgend was formerly the scene of heavy coal mining and industrial manufacture with much atmospheric and water pollution. These industries have now been replaced with Tourism, computer software companies and hi-tech industries and the land restored.

History

It was formed on April 1, 1996 from most of the former district of Ogwr.
