Counties of Britain
The Countries of Britain (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland) are divided into smaller political regions known as Counties. The name arises from the Norman French influence where France was divided into regions ruled by a Count. Prior to the Normans, many of these areas were known as Shires and many still retain this older designation in their names, for example "Northamptonshire". These older counties are sometimes refered to as The Shire Counties and tend to be the more rural counties of Britain. London is also divided into smaller political regions and these are called Boroughs. For the sake of completeness we have also included the Channel Islands and The Isle of Man. Not strictly counties but political regions of the British Isles.
