Stonehenge

Stonehenge has been a feature of the landscape for over 4 thousand years. Situated 2 miles west of Amesbury and 8 miles north of Salisbury, it is one of the most famous sites in the World. The site consists of an earthwork surrounding a complex structure of standing stones arranged in a semi circle with another set of stone inside this arranged in a horse shoe shape.

The whole site is full of a complex set of stones and the remains of post holes that would have held wooden structures. The whole area around Stonehenge includes several hundred burial mounds. There is some learned debate as to when the stones were raised. Some experts think the site is 5,000 years old, others only 4,200.

The exact purpose of Stonehenge continues to be debated but it is clear that is had always been used for burials and continued to be used for that purpose for many centuries. There is evidence that there were earlier wooden temples on the site dating back to 8,000 BC (ten thousand years ago). Until 1977 it was possible to walk amongst the stones but this caused serious erosion and visitors are now kept a short distance away from the stones.

It is permitted to access the stones at any time with the express permission of English Heritage through a special booking and the site is open to access on the Summer and Winter Solstices and the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes. Stonehenge is a legally protected ancient monuments and a World Heritage listed site. It is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage and the National Trust.
