Windsor Castle

Built around 1070 by William the Conqueror to control the Thames, Windsor Castle has been lived in continuously for over 900 years. Originally it would have been a wooden castle on a Motte or artificial hill and was rebuilt in stone later. King Edward III made it suitable to be a Royal residence but it wasn’t till the 1824 century when George II made alterations that made the castle became the comfortable dwelling it now is.

This stone tower, known as the Round Tower is still at the heart of the castle with other defensive walls and buildings extending from it to the east and west. It has always been a Royal residence and is one of the official residences of Queen Elizabeth II who spends a lot of time there for entertaining. The castle has been extended and altered by Kings and Queens over its history.

The castle stands on a rise over looking the town of Windsor in Berkshire. To the rear of the castle grounds are the Home Park which comprise Parkland and farms. Home Park adjoins the northern side of Windsor Great Park with its ancient trees and herds of fallow deer. Rail access is served by two train stations, Windsor & Eton Central and Windsor & Eton Riverside. Windsor is connected by a number of bus routes. The best road access is via junction 56 of the M4.
