Jorvik Viking Centre
Between 1976 and 1981, the site of the old Cravens factory in York was excavated by the York Archaeological Trust. Under the site were founds the remains of the Viking City of Jorvik. Over 40,000 objects were uncovered as well as the remains of timber buildings. The Trust created a reconstruction of the city on site with figures, sounds and smells of the period in order that visitors could get a feel of life in those times and under those conditions.
The time period is 974 AD. The result was the birth of the Jorvik Viking Centre which opened in 1984. In 2001, the facility was updated and expanded and in 2010 a new museum was opened. The centre contains new artefacts, exhibitions and technology features.
