Kew Gardens
Strictly speaking, this should be called The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew but it is almost universally referred to as Kew Gardens by the general public. Kew Gardens was created in 1759 and is set in 25 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland with four listed buildings and 36 magnificent structures, including the Alpine House and the Princess of Wales Greenhouse that creates 10 different climates.
These magnificent gardens and greenhouses are home to the world’s largest collection of living plants and preserved specimens. There are over 30,000 living specimens growing at Kew with a collection of over 7.000,000 preserved plant specimens and seeds. Kew Gardens is an important seed bank and co-sponsors the Millennium Seedbank Project.
The library at Kew contains almost 750,000 books as well as a huge collection of illustrations and drawings. The grounds contain four listed buildings and the site is recognised internationally as a centre of education and research. Kew Gardens attracts over 2 million visitors a year, employs over 700 staff and has an annual income of £57 million.
Kew Gardens has two other properties at Wakehurst place in Sussex and Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent. It is run by The Royal Botanic Gardens.
