Buckingham Palace
Famous as the home of the British monarchy, Buckingham Palace is one of several official homes of the Queen and is the London residence of the Royal Family. Buckingham Palace and the large gardens at the back of the Palace are used for many state occasions and garden parties throughout the summer months.
Buckingham Palace is a very popular tourist destination and crowds gather outside to see The Changing of The Guards which takes place every day at 11 a.m. from the beginning of April till the end of July and on alternate days from August till the end of March. The Palace also contains the Queens Gallery which displays works of art from the Royal Collection. The state Rooms are open to the public during August and September.
The Palace was originally much smaller and was known as Buckingham House. It was built in 1703 for the first Duke of Buckingham but was purchased by King George III in 1776 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte. In the 19th century it was greatly extended and adopted as the official London Palace by Queen Victoria in 1837.
Travel to Buckingham Palace is via Victoria Railway Station from which it is a short walk, via the tube using Victoria, Green park or Hyde Park Corner. Numerous bus routes from all areas of London. Although there are some limited parking facilities nearby, it is not recommend that you attempt to travel to Buckingham Palace by car.
