Leeds Castle, Kent

Built in 1119, Leeds Castle became a royal palace in 1278 during the reign of King Edward I. It is situated seven miles southeast of Maidstone in Kent. One of the prettiest of English castles, Leeds Castle is a major tourist attraction with the castle set in a lake, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and surrounded by its own gardens and estate. The castle opened to the public in 1976.

The castle has an aviary with an international breeding program, a grotto, a maze, a golf course and the museum of Dog Collars. It can be hired for conferences and corporate events. The gardens are magnificent all year round and have been designed to reflect all seasons. The castle is owned and operated by The Leeds Castle Foundation who are dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the castle and grounds.

By car, the castle is seven miles southeast of Maidstone. Take junction 8 off the M20 and follow the signs. By train, travel to Bearsted and take the coach shuttle service.
