St Paul’s Cathedral
Standing on the highest point in the city of London is St Paul’s Cathedral on Ludgate Hill. The first cathedral on this site was built around 600 and there have been four other buildings before this one. The previous building, destroyed in 1666 in the Great Fire of London, had stood since the Normans built it in 1087 to replace the earlier Saxon building which was also destroyed in a fire.
The present building was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, who was responsible for the design of a great many churches rebuilt after the great fire, and finally opened in 1710. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of London and is a dominant landmark on the skyline of London. Until fairly recently, no building in London was permitted to be taller than or obscure St Paul’s.
Many famous people have been interred or commemorated in St Paul’s Cathedral, including Winston Churchill, Lord Kitchener, The Duke of Wellington, Lord Nelson, Florence Nightingale, Alexander Fleming, Joshua Reynolds and many others.
Nearest tube station is St Paul’s and nearby are Bank, Mansion House, Blackfriars and Cannon Street tube stations. All within easy walking distance. Car travel not recommended. Post code for Sat Nav is EC4M 8AD.
