The second largest Cathedral in Britain and Northern Europe, York Minster has existed on the present site the early 4th Century although the early buildings were often destroyed by invaders until the late 11th Century. The present building dates from 1080 with changes and additions over the years, with the main work being completed in 1472. The building has had a very chequered history, with fires destroying great parts of it and at one time it was a ruin. Thankfully restored, this building is well worth a visit when you are in York or the surrounding area.

One of the highlights of the building are the magnificent stain glass windows, some dating back to the 12th century and the Great East Window at 76 foot high is the largest example of medieval stained glass in the world. In the South Transept is the famous Rose window, installed about 1500 to celebrate the union of the House of York and the House of Lancaster.

York Minster is situated in the centre of Old York. Shuttle bus services run to the city centre from the many park and ride facilities. Post code for Sat Nav is YO1 7JN.
