Lincoln Cathedral

Dominating the skyline as you approach, Lincoln, is the magnificent medieval cathedral, regarded as one of the most beautiful of our cathedrals and one of the finest gothic buildings in Europe. After St Paul’s in London and York Minster, it is the third largest of the cathedrals in Britain by floor space and is a wonderfully bright and spiritual building. No trip to Lincoln would be complete without a visit to this stunning building.

The first building, dating from 1072, was destroyed in an earthquake and the present building was started in 1185 and incorporates the remaining part of that original building in the imposing West Front. The cathedral holds one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta. The Wren Library at Lincoln Cathedral hold many hundreds of rare and interesting books and documents, including a school book with the first recorded rhyme about Robin Hood, dating from 1410 and the Lincoln Bible which dates from around 1100.

By road, you can get to Lincoln from the A1 and the A46, from Newark or the A57, A15 or A46. Parking around the cathedral area is limited by there are parking areas within walking distance. Post code for Sat Nav is LN2 1PL. By railway, Lincoln Central Station. Lincoln is a small city and most parts are within easy walking distance of each other.
