Trafalgar Square

To commemorate a famous naval victory at Cape Trafalgar during the Napoleonic Wars between Britain and France, a grateful nation, erected Nelson’s Column. Trafalgar Square is in the heart of London, just north of Charing Cross. It has the column in its centre, flanked by four bronze lions and there are fountains and sculptures all around the square.

Trafalgar square is a major tourist destination and the feral pigeons were very popular with tourist and visitors who liked to feed them. However, they grew to an estimated 35,000 birds and their droppings caused much damage to the surrounding buildings. It is now not permitted to feed them and as a result, their numbers have declined to a more manageable size.

In 2003, the road that ran along the North side of the Square, in front of the National Gallery, was closed and replace with a raised piazza and pedestianised. The square is used by the public for demonstrations and rally and for celebrations. Trafalgar Square is owned by the Queen.

Travel to Trafalgar Square is via Charing Cross Railway station and Tube station, Embankment Tube station and Leicester Square tube station. There are a number of bus routes that run to the Square. As with most attractions in Central London, car travel is not really a practical option.
