Houses of Parliament
The Houses of Parliament is also known as the Palace of Westminster. It contains the two houses of the British Parliament; the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Houses of Parliament are situated on the north bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster which is a London Borough.
Visitors can watch Parliament in action in either house by using the Public Galleries when either house in is session. Public committee sessions are open to everyone and take place on Monday to Thursday of most weeks.
A palace has stood on this site since the time of the Saxon king Edward the Confessor, although the original building has long gone. The current Palace was designed by Sir Charles Barry and built from 1840 and completed in 1870. The Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament contains the famous bell known as Big Ben and is a major tourist attraction and an iconic image of London and England, together with Red double decker buses and London Taxi Cabs.
Travelling to The Houses of Parliament is via the tube station Westminster Tube Station or a short walk from Victoria, Waterloo or Charing Cross Rail Stations which also have connecting buses. Car transport is not a practical option and there are no drop-off facilities.
